Running an advocate's case diary digitally: a practical checklist

What a case diary must capture for an Indian chamber, and how to move from a paper diary without losing a date.

Updated 31 Oct 2026 · General information, not legal advice for a particular case.

What the diary must capture

  • Every listing with court hall, item number, purpose and who will appear.
  • The outcome and next date, entered the same day.
  • Service status of each party, process fees and certified copies pending.
  • Limitation deadlines from every order that is likely to be appealed.
  • Who in the chamber owns each task, and whether it is done.

Moving off paper

Start with the next four weeks of listings, not the whole archive. Add matters as they come up, enter outcomes every evening, and check the list of past dates with no next date each morning until it is empty. Paste eCourts case status for older matters to pull in their history.

What to look for in software

  • Works on the phone in court, including without signal.
  • Separate sign-ins for juniors and clerks, with an audit log.
  • Client data kept private: no client files sent to outside AI services.
  • Export of all your data at any time.
